5 YEAR TERMITE RETREATMENTS RECOMMENDED BY HUD, NPMA & EPA REGISTERED TERMITE CHEMICALS
There are reports of wrong information being told to consumers regarding the legality of 5 year termite treatments. Although these 5 year retreatments are NOT required by law to sell your home, a growing number of termite firms are requiring them to continue their termite protection warranties. NPMA and HUD also recommend that a termite treatment be made prior to a home sale if past evidence of termites is found-but no live insects- and there is no treatment or current warranty documentation within the past 5 years. Only yearly retreatments are prohibited in the absence of live termites or soil disruption.
Termite chemical labels that are registered by the EPA also state: "When a structure is not known to be reinfested and the treated zone is not disturbed, but where the structure was last treated five or more years ago, retreatment may be performed if, in the judgement of the applicator, it is necessary to ensure adequate protection of the structure. In determining the timing of any retreatment, the applicator should consider efficacy and/or degradation data and/or sitespecific conditions and previous experience that indicate a vulnerability of the structure to termite attack. Annual retreatment of the structure is prohibited unless there is clear evidence that reinfestation or treated zone disruption has occurred".
This data is based on US Forest Service research in select areas of the country. Based on current data, the average degradation in sandy soils in our area is 4 to 6 years.
Cockroaches and termites have always been known to be similar in certain features, but they still were listed in different orders, an entomological family tree, if you will...until now.
